Many people think goldfish are a boring pet, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! There’s so much about goldfish that the general population isn’t aware of. Here are four quirky facts about the most popular aquarium fish you may never have heard before:
Due to the name ‘goldfish’, we instantly presume that each and every fish’s scales are gold in colour, however, this isn’t the case. Some goldfish have a red tone to their scales, while others showcase hues of silver, brown and even black. Just like humans, goldfish have their own visual identities!
2. Length and weight
What you may not have realised is that all goldfish vary in size and weight. The smaller ones can reach up to six inches, while the larger variety can reach up to a foot in length. We don’t mean to scare you, but some goldfish have been recorded to reach the size of a fully grown cat – although we must add that this is very much a rarity!
Goldfish have a three second memory, right? As we outlined in our previous blog, that’s just a downright myth. Goldfish are actually very intelligent and are capable of performing tricks like other pets. With the correct skills, you can teach them to perform tricks for food due to their incredible capacity to learn and retain information. If you wish to see the very best of goldfish behaviour, why not purchase a few companions to see how they react with one another? When new fish enter the aquarium, they can usually adopt some unusual and often ‘bully-like’ behaviours, such as chasing other new members around the tank and fin-nipping.
Goldfish have a vacuum-like mouth to suck food from the water’s surface. One weird and wonderful fact is that they also have taste buds on their lips and will eat pretty much anything given to them – however, this is not recommended!
